Mental preparation is just as important as physical preparation for any baseball player. For Pablo López, it has been a journey of self-discovery and growth, one that has led him to the practice of meditation. López has spoken openly about the benefits of meditation, citing its ability to help him stay present and focused. Pablo López is a rare breed in baseball. He is always preparing, always thinking ahead. This might be seen as a positive trait, but for López, it can sometimes be a double-edged sword. He has admitted to overthinking and overanalyzing, which can lead to mental fatigue. However, López is not one to shy away from challenges. He has recognized the importance of mental preparation and is constantly seeking ways to improve. López has been experimenting with meditation, finding it to be a valuable tool for staying present and focused. He practices meditation on the bus, in the dugout, and even in the clubhouse. For López, meditation is a way to clear his mind and gain clarity. He uses guided meditations that help him visualize outcomes and stay focused on the present moment. Meditation is a simple yet powerful practice. It involves finding a comfortable position, focusing on the breath, and letting go of thoughts. The goal is to achieve a state of mindfulness, where the individual can observe their thoughts and emotions without judgment. Some guided meditations may include lessons on dealing with challenges or offer words of wisdom, but at its core, meditation is about being present and aware. López practices meditation four times a week during the season. He finds that it helps him stay focused and avoid getting caught up in negative thoughts. The practice itself has become a part of his routine, and he has noticed a significant difference in his performance on the mound. “I give my breath purpose, meaning, and intention,” López said. “It’s like, if I know I’m breathing, if I’m conscious about the breath, it’s like, ‘OK, I know where I am. I am where my feet are.’ So I give a lot of meaning and intent to my breathing.”
When López is on the mound, he tries to block out negative thoughts and stay focused on the present moment. He finds that this helps him stay centered and avoid getting caught up in worrying about the outcome of the game. “A lot of times, strengths can be flaws,” López said. “It’s OK to think that you’re preparing, but then you have a lot of these scenarios in your head, and you’re always thinking that they’re going to happen. Do you want to be so overprepared that you’re exhausting yourself when things haven’t happened yet? It’s like paying a debt that I don’t owe yet. So I did a lot of work on, like, how can I just simplify things?”
López’s manager, Rocco Baldelli, has noticed a significant change in his demeanor and approach on the mound. “I think he’s made not just an effort, but an actual change in demeanor,” Baldelli said. “As opposed to the overly contemplative approach. So yes, I think that that is a noticeable thing for him and a good thing for him too, overall.”
Meditation has been a game-changer for López, helping him stay focused and avoid mental fatigue. By practicing meditation regularly, López has been able to improve his performance on the mound and become a more confident pitcher. His journey with meditation is a testament to the power of mindfulness and the importance of mental preparation in sports.
